Humans in Nature Project- Exploring the Influence of Nature on Young Adults

In March 2024, I wrote an article for Dr. Aaron Ebata’s Humans in Nature Project which explored how University of Illinois students perceive nature. The interviews revealed that many students believe nature positively impacts their mental health and strengthens family bonds. Weather plays a key role in their outdoor experiences, and those with less exposure to nature during childhood often expressed a stronger dislike for bugs and dirt. Urbanization also shapes these views, and the study concludes that early exposure to nature and environmental education are essential for building a positive relationship with the natural world. Understanding how young adults think about nature was an important first step before discussing its benefits in future projects. This process deepened my insight into how they relate to the natural environment.

So, how does nature relate to human stress? Can nature really help us heal? Many young adults face challenges from school, work, family, friendships, and future concerns. I’ve often seen students, myself included, push aside feelings of being overwhelmed in the pursuit of their goals, which can lead to burnout. It’s unintentional but common among young adults striving for success. If this stress isn’t addressed, it can harm both mental and physical health. That's why it’s crucial to prioritize mental well-being, and nature can be a simple yet powerful tool to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies show that spending time in nature greatly helps. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, step outside and breathe in fresh air. Take a walk through a park or under some trees. Even this small act can help you reconnect and recharge, something many college students overlook.
It’s natural to feel uncertain or unstable as a young adult, but I encourage you to trust in yourself and keep moving forward. Take time to absorb in the positive energy that nature offers and recharge whenever you need it. It’s a simple yet effective way to care for your mental health during this important phase of life.
Lastly, I would like to share the documentary I created based on these interviews.
